Mike has been hooping for over 5 years and in that time has fallen in love with hooping and teaching object manipulation technique. His analytical teaching style informs intuitive, hard to explain concepts, through single technique-based breakdowns. With successful workshops at The Spin Summit (2014, 2015), Kinetic Fire (2014), Flow camp (2015), Mo Flow (2015), FlowMotion (2014, 2015), Hyperion (2015),Florida Flow Fest (2015), and FlowDown Fire Festival (2014, 2015). Along with popular videos online, Mike hopes to help hoopers throughout the community expand their repertoire.

DAY 1 SCHEDULE

#1 Continuous Folded Hooping

Growing in popularity over the past two years, “folding” has become a genre of hoop moves that is essential for a complete skill set. It forces hoopers to explore manipulating their hoop in the third dimension, rather than sticking to the standard wall and ceiling planes. Not only that, but almost all the folded hooping moves feed straight into and out of each other within combos, they are very satisfying to learn. For over 3 years, Mike Hayataka has been completely absorbed in folding and the endless possibilities it offers. His experience allows him break down moves that beginners and advanced hoopers can easily pick up. After we learn the 4 essential folding moves - the basic folded circuit, carousel, folded vortex, and the escalator (all the ways) - we will easily be able create our own infinite combos. In Mike’s all day folded workshop we will be moving into more advanced folded moves as well. These will give beginners something to practice and work towards, while giving advanced hoopers a challenge as many of these moves will be new. He will be covering - folded tosses (in all the planes), 2 general techniques for catching all tosses in folding moves, and endless escalator entries.

#2 Folded Tosses:

Stemming from the style of folded hooping, we will explore ways to throw the hoop so that it orbits through the air. This will take place with the hoop orbiting in multiple planes. It is however very difficult to catch these tosses, so much of the class will be focused on how to receive the hoop. Also, it is recommended that hoopers have some basic understanding of escalators and wrist wraps, this class is recommended for anyone above beginner level.

#3 Contact Hooping

In Contact hooping we will be using the fundamentals of what we learned in Continuous Folded Hooping, to learn how to fold our hoop without ever gripping it! Most hoopers have experienced some of the techniques in this class, but most likely it was an accident, catching a drop, for example. We will learn how these little accidents can inform a style of hooping that resembles contact staff manipulation.
